Garena first unveiled the Garena Student Alliance, better known as the GSA, back in March this year. The organisation has now officially launched the programme at the third season of the Malaysia Campus League Season 3 (MYCL).
The Malaysian Campus League is now part of the GSA, and is a campus event co-managed by students and their respective GSA esports club presidents. This installment of the tournament was held at Sunway University and featured two popular esports titles – League of Legends and FIFA Online 3. Thirteen collegiate esports clubs from universities all over Malaysia went head to head for their share of the RM8,000 cash prize pool. The 17 Malaysian universities involved were as follows:
- IIUM
- HELP
- UTAR
- UniRazak
- Asia Pacific Universiy
- MMU Melaka
- Inti Nilai
- UniKL
- UCSI
- Sunway University
- UNMC
- SEGi College Kota Damansara
- Politeknik Metro Kuantan
- INTI Penang
- USM
- UM
- Taylor’s University
For the League of Legends tournament, Taylor’s University won themselves a cool RM2,000 grand prize, while Asia Pacific University came in second (RM1,000). Sunway University 1 and Sunway University 2 came in third and fourth place, granting them RM500 each. As for the FIFA Online 3 tournament, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) defeated Sunway University 1 for first place and the grand prize of RM2,000. Sunway University 1 won second place with a RM1,000 prize, while Asia Pacific University and Multimedia University were in third and fourth place, with each team getting RM500 respectively.
Apart from the tournament, Garena Malaysia is also holding a MYCL Host Search, which is a talent search program for all university students to get themselves involved in esports broadcasting productions.
It’s great to see Garena pushing esports in Malaysia forward by starting them young at the collegiate level. We hope more universities would join the GSA and we look forward to more Malaysia Campus League tournaments held by these campuses.
