For the past few years now, Xiaomi has been mostly focused on offering its range of smartphones in Malaysia. However, there’s a good chance the company will change things up a bit this year: Xiaomi has recently registered two non-smartphone products in SIRIM.
These two products are the Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale and Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 3, which were registered with SIRIM on 12 and 13 April respectively. In retrospect, it’s worth noting that these two are not exactly new products: the Mi WiFi Router 3 was unveiled early last year, while the Smart Scale was introduced back in 2015.
Considering the fact that both of these products were launched quite some time ago, it’s interesting to see Xiaomi going through the trouble of registering them with SIRIM. More likely than not, the Mi Smart Scale and Mi WiFi Router 3 will be officially sold in Malaysia in the near future. But more importantly: is Xiaomi planning to open a Mi Home in Malaysia?
Back at the launch event of the Xiaomi Mi Mix and Mi Note 2, the then-vice president of Xiaomi – Hugo Barra – mentioned that the company was “looking to expand and scale its operations in Malaysia.” Naturally, opening a Mi Home on our shores is one way to do it, and the availability of more Xiaomi products in Malaysia could foreshadow this.
After all, over the past few months, Xiaomi has launched quite a number of products in Malaysia, including the Xiaomi Mi Box and two in-ear earphones. Hopefully, the opening of a Mi Home in Malaysia is only a matter of time.
