Taking care of virtual pets was a really big thing back in the 90s, and for those of us who want to relive the good ol’ times, you can do just that with Bandai Namco’s new (kind of) Tamagotchi – it’s pretty affordable too.
Designed to be similar to the original Tamagotchi released back in 1996, this “new” Tamagochi features the same six pets and similar colourful egg designs. However, there are a couple of changes: the new Tamagotchi has a square LCD instead of a rectangle one, and it’s much more compact than the original.

Although this new Tamagotchi isn’t 100% similar to the original one, it appears Japanese netizens don’t really mind: the device is reportedly being sold out almost immediately, although Amazon Japan still has it in stock at the time of this writing.
The popularity of this new Tamagotchi shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, it retails at about the same price as the original Tamagotchi at 1,900 Japanese yen – that’s about RM75. While it’s not exactly a very affordable device, it certainly has a nostalgic appeal akin to the new Nokia 3310.
At the moment, the new Tamagotchi is only sold in Japan, but we imagine it’s only a matter of time before it is brought into Malaysia – officially or not.
