First unveiled at CES 2017 earlier this year, Garmin’s new fēnix 5 multisport GPS watch series has finally arrived in Malaysia. Launched earlier this week by AECO Technologies which is the company’s distributor in our market, it comes in three different models which include the standard fēnix 5 as well as the fēnix 5S and fēnix 5X.
As compared to its predecessors such as the fēnix 3HR, the new fēnix 5 is apparently much more compact and comes with new industrial design. Built with a 47mm, the standard fēnix 5 also features 1.2-inch display with battery life of up to 2 weeks in smart mode, 24 hours of GPS or HR, and 60 hours in UltraTrac mode.
As for the fēnix 5S, it has even much more compact physique thanks to is 42mm body. The watch also features smaller display at 1.1-inch alongside battery life of up to 9 days in smart mode, 14 hours for GPS/HR mode, and 35 hours in UltraTrac mode.
As the lead model in the series, the fēnix 5X does come with a slightly bigger body at 51mm but still features the same 1.2-inch display as per standard fēnix 5. In terms of battery life, the fēnix 5X is able to last up to 12 days in smart mode, 20 hours with GPS/HR, and 35 hours in UltraTrac mode.
At the same time, the watch also comes with a more durable sapphire glass and is also the only model in the series to be preloaded with topographic mapping that allows users to navigate their way directly through fēnix 5X.
The standard fēnix 5 and fēnix 5S can also be obtained with sapphire glass as well although at a higher price tag than their base variants. Apart from having more durable glass, sapphire-equipped models in the fēnix 5 watch series are also equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity.
In terms of general functionalities, all fēnix 5 watches are made to cater to various type of sports including running, cycling, swimming, hiking, rowing, golf, and many more. Users can also take advantage of fēnix 5 advanced features such as Training Status, Training Effect, and VO2 max estimator to further help provide insights to their fitness.
At the same time, these watches are also designed to allow users to track their daily activity and sleep quality with the assistance of the built-in Garmin Elevate wrist-based heart rate monitor which is a standard feature on all fēnix 5 watches. All the data from fēnix 5 watches can be synced to Garmin Connect for analysis and easy reference.
Despite being fitness-oriented watches, users are able to see emails, texts, and alerts on fēnix 5 watches when paired to compatible smartphones. Furthermore, users are able to customize these watches with apps, widget, data fields, and watch faces through Connect IQ. Not to forget, they are also compatible with Face It app which allows users to utilize their own photos as watch face on their fēnix 5 watches.
All fēnix 5 watches are water-resistant up to the depth of 100m and supports QuickFit interchangeable bands that are available in leather, metal, and silicone. The new Garmin fēnix 5 and fēnix 5S are readily available in Malaysia for RM 2,899 while the sapphire variants for them are priced RM 3,149 each. As for fēnix 5X, it will only be available in April for RM 3,399.
