HyppTV has partnered with BBC Worldwide to bring the BBC Player to Malaysia. This video-on-demand service brings content from the BBC to the online streaming model. It’s effectively the British broadcaster’s answer to Netflix.
To its credit, HyppTV has already been broadcasting content from the BBC for several years. Six channels are available through the HyppTV jumbo pack. These are: BBC First, BBC Brit, BBC Earth, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies, and BBC World News.
HyppTV subscribers will be able to login to the BBC Player app using their HyppTV accounts. This is as simple as tapping on a button while on a Unifi or Streamyx connection. This only has to be done once to authenticate the device, and the subscriber is then free to access content from outside the home.
The most popular British shows will be available through BBC Player, including Top Gear, Dr Who, and the Great British Bake Off (the most watched show in the UK). Interestingly, Sherlock is not among the shows listed.
The BBC Player app also allows users to download videos for offline viewing. The shows will remain in storage for 30 days before the user will have to download it again. Alternatively, viewers will be able to watch shows through their web browser.
There’s a limited range of shows on the BBC Player at the moment, although we have been told that the content is the same across all regions with access to the service. That said, only Malaysia and Singapore have access to the BBC Player for now.
It should be noted that this is not the same as the BBC iPlayer. The iPlayer is a separate service catering to British citizens, while the BBC Player is designed to cater to an international audience. For now, the only way to subscribe to the BBC Player in Malaysia is through the HyppTV Jumbo Pack.
