Garena has established what is called the Garena Student Alliance, or better known as the GSA, in order to promote competitive gaming among tertiary students in Malaysia.
Essentially, the Garena Student Alliance’s role is to help students create and manage their own eSports club in their respective universities. The GSA will teach students different aspects such as tournament administration, preparing partnership proposals, event marketing, as well as keeping them up to date on the current state of eSports.
Garena hopes to instill three core principles in students involved – innovate to educate, serve the community and promote eSports in Malaysia. In addition, the GSA will be providing further support by organising community events, Garena roadshows, and also giving away exclusive GSA merchandise.
This isn’t the first time Garena has promoted eSports amongst tertiary students. The company first offered its very own eSports scholarship in Malaysia back in 2016, and has organised multiple eSports bootcamps in February 2017 across different campuses throughout Malaysia.
Moving forward, the two games that GSA will work closely on with students will be Riot Games’ popular MOBA title, League of Legends, and EA Sports FIFA Online 3. The Malaysia Campus League was a big success back in 2016 and it would be great to see Garena continue their move in pioneering eSports forward in Malaysia.
