At Samsung’s booth at MWC 2017, a curious piece of “accessory” adorned the walls alongside phone cases and covers: the Samsung SSD PowerPack, a product that (you guessed it) combines an external SSD with a power bank for your smartphone.
We’ve seen external battery packs (or better known as power banks) being paired with things like LED flashlights because they complement each other’s uses, but I can say with absolute certainty that this is the first time I’ve seen an external SSD being part of a power bank. Or is that a power bank with an external SSD?
No one seems to know, to be honest. Even the Samsung product experts manning the massive booth at MWC do not have the slightest idea of when it was launched (“it’s new”), how much it will cost (“¯\_(ツ)_/¯”), or even where this product will be available (another “¯\_(ツ)_/¯”).
Heck, there wasn’t even a visible port to connect your smartphone to, so we don’t know if it’s a USB Type C or micro USB port. Or why the word “Flask” is there in the middle of the product.
All we know is in the photo above: it is called the Samsung SSD PowerPack, it has a 500GB SSD and a 5,600mAh battery pack, and it is capable of simultaneous data transfer while charging.
We’ve reached out to Samsung to see if even they know this product exists.
