Every gamer knows that consoles don’t matter quite as much as the games on them. Why is likely why Nintendo spent most of its Switch presentation talking about what’s coming for the the new console, although it didn’t go into much detail about most of them.
For starters, there is the obligatory party game in 1-2 Switch. It’s a collection of mini-games that use the accelerometers in the Joy-Cons, similar to that of Wii Sports. At the presentation, Nintendo showed off a cowboy style quick-draw game; where players were facing each other instead of the display. Be prepared for multiple “high noon” jokes.
Arms is Wii boxing turned up to 11. The game using similar boxing mechanics with the Joy-Con controllers, but introduces an arena style battle and super powers. It’s highly stylised, bringing Nintendo’s trademark cartoonish look to an entirely new look at fighting games.
Splatoon 2 will also be making an appearance on the Nintendo Switch, introducing new weapons, mechanics, and maps. It looks like the squid-creatures have developed powers as well, and are now able to launch devastating area-of-effect attacks. Curiously, Splatoon 2 will only launch in the summer instead of with the Switch.
Mario turns up with an entirely new look. Super Mario Odyssey is an open world sandbox game that has Mario leave the Mushroom Kingdom to journey across other worlds. These worlds differ wildly, with one particular place looking like real world New York. As with Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey is not a launch title.
The good news is that the only game that matters, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is being released at the same time as the Nintendo Switch.
Several other developers also turned up to tease their work on the Switch. Few details were released, but here’s a short rundown of some of the games that appeared. We may have missed a few during the quick trailer.
