Yi Technology’s 4K+ One-Ups GoPro As The World’s First 4K 60FPS Action Cam

Yi Technology has followed up its 4K Action Camera by unveiling the Yi 4K+ – the first action cam able to record 4K in 60fps. The new camera trumps GoPro’s Hero5 which caps out at 30fps for 4K footage. To further add to the blow, the Yi 4K+ is said to retail for a just $299 (about RM1,300) – a hundred dollars less than GoPro’s offering.

The Yi 4k+ uses a 12.3 Megapixel Sony IMX377 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, which isn’t all that different from its predecessor. The Yi 4K+ is, however, the first action camera to run an Ambarella H2 chipset, a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 ARM processor. It’s this new CPU that allows the Yi 4K+ to record its “world-first” 60fps 4K video.

Another improvement on the Yi 4K+ is the higher maximum bitrate of 135Mbps (compared to the 60Mbps of the Yi 4K). The higher bitrate should allow for sharper and more detailed video quality, albeit at a bigger file size. The Yi 4K+ also records Full HD 1080p video up to 120fps and 720p at 240fps.

The Yi 4K+ also uses a USB Type-C connector, which Yi Technology claims can transfer footage at speeds up to 40mbps. Other features of the Yi 4K+ include Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), live streaming capability, voice-activated controls, and VR support.

There is currently no word on when the Yi 4K+ will be available, however its asking price of $299 (about RM1,300) is rather attractive. Especially considering how its features are twice as good as the GoPro Hero5 but not twice as expensive.
