Any fan of mechanical keyboard would know Cherry, and just recently, the company released a new mechanical keyboard dubbed MX Board Silent. While the design of this keyboard isn’t exactly new, it’s one of the first few keyboards to come with Cherry’s MX Silent switches, which are really the stars of the show.
Based on Cherry’s G80-3000 keyboard, the MX Board Silent can be configured with MX Red Silent or MX Black Silent switches. For the most part, these two switches have the same actuation forces and linear nature as regular MX Red and Black switches, only much more silent. We tried out these MX Silent switches for ourselves at Cherry’s booth at CES 2017, and it’s pretty remarkable how quiet these switches are.
MX Red Silent and MX Black Silent aren’t exactly new switches: they were first used on Corsair’s mechanical keyboards, which had a timed exclusivity deal with Cherry for these switches. The exclusivity ended at the end of 2016, so we can expect more manufacturers to use these MX Silent switches on their own products. We were told that more keyboards with these quiet switches will start hitting the market in the very near future.
For now though, consumers can opt for Cherry’s own MX Board Silent – and certain Corsair keyboards – if they want to try out the MX Silent switches. The MX Board Silent retails at $149, which comes up to about RM665; it remains to be seen if this new mechanical keyboard will be made available in Malaysia.
