As promised, Apple has just released the iOS 9.3.1 update that fixes the bug that causes apps to crash when opening links. It is a pretty small update (about 30+MB on my iPhone 6s), and is available immediately through over the air update or via iTunes.
Last weekend, users started to experience a very annoying problem when they tried to open links – the app will hang and crash. It was later found that the bug was caused by oversized apps that would “overload the daemond that had to parse these files, causing the app to crash”. Booking.com was one of the affected apps, but the company has already issued an update to fix it. Sadly, since there are a lot more apps that are affected by this problem, and uninstalling affected apps couldn’t fix it, Apple has to address the issue with its own update.
This is the third iOS 9.3 related update since it was release a little over a week ago. The first was shortly after iOS 9.3 was released, which caused activation problems on the iPad 2. Just a few days back, Apple released another iOS 9.3 update with the build number 13R5237 for older devices that addresses other activation problems.
Let’s hope that iOS 9.3.1 is a lot more stable with no more bugs. To update, go to the Settings app on your iOS device, tap on General, Software Update, download and install iOS 9.3.1.
