Apple may have released a new iOS 9.3 update yesterday that is meant for older iOS devices, but it looks like the update still does not fix the bug that causes apps to hang and crash when opening links. Apple acknowledges the problem and says that they are working on a fix, which would be coming “soon”.
Over the weekend, there were reports about apps crashing when users tries to open a link. 9to5Mac reports that after installing the Booking.com app on an unaffected iPhone 6 and iPad Pro, Safari would hang when they try to long press links. The problem was still persistent even after they uninstalled Booking.com.
It was later found that the problem has something to do a website association file that is used by the system for universal link features introduced with iOS 9. The file was way oversized and would “overload the daemon that had to parse these files, causing the app to crash”. Booking.com has since updated its app so if you are using it, do uninstall and reinstall it again.
Sadly though, Booking.com isn’t the only app affected by this bug and it is too tedious to find all the individual apps with a problem. Apple acknowledges the bug and says that they will release a software update “soon”. The bug affects most iOS devices including iPhone 5/5s/6/6 Plus/6s and 6s Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini. Anyone here affected by the bug?
