Facebook has updated its app for BlackBerry devices, and chances are that consumers are not going to be very happy with the changes. The update essentially strips all functions from the app and reduces it to a web browser link. All BlackBerry users are required to install the update, since the old app will be disabled on 31 March 2016.
The change is rather substantial, as it removes Facebook integration from the BlackBerry Hub. This prevents users from receiving notifications from the social media network, and BB 10 devices will no longer be able to share photos and videos directly to Facebook using the Share icon.
BlackBerry claims that the change is due to a private application API not being made available. It seems to imply that Facebook doesn’t want BlackBerry interacting with its social network; which would be an extremely unusual move for a company that wants as much reach as it can get.
Admittedly, the Facebook app on BB 10 needed a lot of work for it to catch up with Android and iOS. Unfortunately, it seems that Facebook would rather ditch support for the platform instead of divert resources to supporting it.
