Telekom Malaysia (TM) yesterday has announced that it has entered an agreement with British Telecommunications (BT) surrounding Wi-Fi roaming access for customers of both companies. In essence, this agreement will allow TM’s customers to access BT’s Wi-Fi hotspots not only in United Kingdom but also across the globe.
According to TM, this will involve almost 400,000 hotspots in UK alone that supports a key protocol called Wireless Internet Service Provider roaming (WISPr). Through WISPr, it allows users to roam between different Wi-Fi providers just like how users roam between mobile telcos.
Likewise, BT’s customers will also be able to access TM’s Wi-Fi network in Malaysia as part of the agreement. TM has stated there are already more than 4,600 TM WiFi hotspots all over the country with many of them are strategically located at airports, hotels, convention centers, and cafes which should benefit BT pool of customers that come from throughout the world.
As interesting as this news might be, TM and BT didn’t mention any details regarding the actual steps that customers need to take before they are able to access these hotspots. Furthermore, they also didn’t elaborate on when exactly customers of both companies will be able to enjoy their inter-operator Wi-Fi access. We hope that these vital information will be announced soon enough.
