Network-attached storage (NAS) might be a foreign concept to some users out there but as it is starting to become more common for users to own more than one devices, having NAS as a centralized file storage is not a bad idea at all. This is where the newly released Synology DiskStation DS216j comes into the picture which is apparently designed for home and personal users.
With the ability to support up to two hard drives (have to be purchased separately though), the DS216j is the entry-level model of the company’s DS216 series but it still able to deliver some punches though. Running on a 1.0GHz Marvell Armada 385 88F6820 dual-core processor and 512MB DDR3 RAM, it has read speed of 112.75MB/sec and write speed of 97.6MB/sec.
The DS216j also comes with a built-in floating-point unit to help accelerate multimedia files processing including photos and audio. Being a DLNA certified media server, this allows users to stream contents from the NAS to their other DLNA-certified devices easily.
According to Synology, DS216j not only suitable for file storages and media server but it can also be used as a home surveillance hub since it supports numerous amount of IP cameras across various brands and models. The company also claimed that DS216j doesn’t require much energy to run as it apparently consumes 14.85W at peak usages and 6.95W while hibernating.
Not for forget, the DS216j also comes with two USB 3.0 port on its rear and a set of LED indicators with adjustable brightness control. While we not able to obtain the Malaysian pricing at the moment, the Synology DiskStation DS216j comes with a general MSRP of USD 162 (about RM 662) not inclusive of GST and is already on its way to our market.
