Mojang has finally released the much awaited Minecraft 1.9 update, which brings with it host of combat improvements. Yes, Minecraft has combat. For those not so inclined to go to battle, there are new explorations options and several new items.
Fans of Minecraft have long been asking for expanded combat options, and Mojang has taken its time in delivering. The introduction Minecraft 1.9 brings with it a new cooldown period on melee attacks, which makes timing swings more important. Swords and axes also gain their own special attacks, while shields have been added to the game. Naturally, the shields can also be customised in the same manner as banners; adding another option for players to express themselves.
Bows and arrows also gain an improvement with the ability to enhance arrows with potions. This allows things like safely hitting mobs with debuff potions by shooting them. Any potion can be used to tip arrows, which means they can also be used to buff allies. It is not actually recommended that people try to create healing arrows.
Explorers will also be able to discover Igloos, which are locations similar to jungle and desert temples. Igloos are filled with more interesting loot drops, and it is definitely worth tracking them down. The more adventurous types can try to explore the The End, where new fortresses will spawn. This is also the only place where people will be able to find the Elytra, wings that take up the chest slot and allow a player to glide.
Minecraft 1.9 is currently only available on PC, although the features should be making their way to other platforms eventually. Mojang has been known to move very slowly when pushing out updates, so those on consoles will have to be patient while waiting for their new toys.
