Street Fighter V was officially launched in Malaysia last night. The event was held at APW (Art Paper Works), and was organised by Play Interactive Asia. Other notable companies that were present include Gamers Hideout (distributor), Streamline Studios, Telekom Malaysia and even the government-owned MDeC (Multimedia Development Corporation). Here’s our recap of the event last night.
Upon reaching APW, it was apparent that Street Fighter V is a highly anticipated game in Malaysia. There were a bunch of gamers forming a line to pre-order the game hours before the official launch date; talk about dedication. However, there is a catch. According to Putra, one of many eager gamers in the line, customers that came early to pre-order the game had to come back at midnight for the official launch of Street Fighter V to secure their copy.
Interestingly, the first 100 customers that pre-ordered Street Fighter V during the launch event was given a free t-shirt and stickers as well. In addition to that, there was also a Street Fighter V tournament, which had a total prize pool of RM2,000. The winner of the tournament received a cash price of RM1,000, while the first, second and third runners up won RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively.
Prizes, however, weren’t limited to those that entered the tournament only. In fact, customers that pre-ordered Street Fighter V were also eligible to win lucky draw prizes. These include one SFV Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition, one BigBoysToys Ken or Chun-Li figurine, three Mad Catz SFV FightPad Pro and five Gamers Hideout cash vouchers worth RM100. Surprisingly, the grand prize offered during the launch event was a flight ticket to this year’s Tokyo Game Show, which will be held sometime in September.
Aside from the launch of Street Fighter V itself, there were also booths set up for companies like Streamline Studios to showcase its portfolio. Streamline Studios is a Netherlands-based company that operates in Malaysia, and it is backed by MDeC as well. According to its co-founder, Stefan Baier, Streamline Studios worked alongside Capcom to design several stages in Street Fighter V.
Overall, the event went fairly smoothly. Despite being overcrowded in the beginning, the event got more organised in the later hours. Many gamers left with smiles on their faces after finally securing a copy of Street Fighter V. The game is now available for purchase through retailers such as Gamers Hideout here. For those that prefer playing the game on PC, the game will be available on Steam by February 17th for RM222.
