While some users might not be aware of this, TM is currently working to turn P1 into a mobile player. By that, we mean as a full fledged telco service instead of just being ISP. Today, the company today has taken one step closer to its mobile ambition by signing domestic roaming partnership with Celcom.
Through this deal, future customers of the upcoming P1 mobile services will be able to communicate through Celcom’s 3G network. In fact, the reason that TM chooses to collaborate with Celcom is due to telco’s wide network reach throughout the country. According to P1’s CEO, Puan Chan Cheong, the new deal with Celcom is on 5 years basis with options to extend it further for 5 additional years.
Since the P1 mobile service is still a work in progress, there are so many details that are yet to be revealed by all the parties involved in the project. That being said though, the service is expected to be ready within the first half of 2016 according to Tan Sri Zamzamzairani, the Group CEO for TM Group.
It is rather interesting to see that TM is working to expanding from its traditional primary role as fixed line-based service provider and infrastructure developer. However, our mobile market is already quite competitive as it is which means it is not going to be an easy walk in the park even for a company that is as prominent as TM.
