With the success of Dota 2’s Frankfurt Major comes Valve’s first Major season for 2016. The Shanghai Major is hosted by Perfect World, and the tournament will be held in China. 16 Dota 2 teams from around the world will be battling it out for a total prize pool of USD$3 million (about RM13.2 million).
Also known as the Winter Major, the open qualifiers have begun from the 3rd to the 6th of January, while the main event will take place from the 2nd to the 6th of March at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China.
Seeing that OG (formerly known as Monkey Business) is the champion of the Frankfurt Major, it comes as no surprise that the team automatically gets the invite to the Shanghai Major. Other teams that got the invite include Team Secret, EG, EHOME, Vici Gaming, CDEC, Virtus Pro, and Alliance.
Those who did not get invited had to join the online open qualifiers hosted by FACEIT and Perfect World. Local favourite, Fnatic, managed to earn itself a slot in the main event. Other than that, LGD Gaming, Team Liquid, Archon, MVP.Phoenix, Newbee, Team Spirit and Complexity will also be playing in the group stages at the main event.
Ticket prices for the Shanghai Major main event have also been revealed. General admission day pass ticket prices range from 99 Yuan (about RM65) to 169 Yuan (roughly RM110), depending on which day you’re attending the event. General admission pack tickets, on the other hand, costs 499 Yuan (approximately RM330) for all five days of the event and includes exclusive gift pack. If you’d like the full experience, the VIP tickets cost 999 Yuan (about RM670) for all five days, which comes with exclusive gift pack as well as better seating locations.
Valve usually has a compendium for its major tournaments, but as of this writing, the Shanghai Major compendium has not yet been revealed. The prize pool split has also not been announced yet. To learn more about the tournament, head over to the official website.
