EVGA, well known for its exceptional work on Nvidia graphics cards, is now venturing into a different market. At CES 2016, EVGA unveiled its first gaming laptop called the SC17. It’s worth noting that EVGA isn’t the first graphics card manufacturer to produce a gaming laptop; MSI and Gigabyte has done it before.
However, EVGA mentioned that since the SC17 is built entirely in-house by EVGA’s engineers, the gaming laptop might have a slight advantage compared to its rivals. Like the name of the laptop suggests, the EVGA SC17 has a 17.3-inch 4K display and sports an Intel Core i7-6820HK CPU; the HK abbreviation in the CPU name means that it is an unlocked CPU. Interestingly, the Core i7-6820HK is the only mobile Skylake processor to have overclocking capabilities.
In addition to that, the EVGA SC17 also comes with a GTX 980M graphics card with overclocking support. Besides that, the gaming laptop is further equipped with 16GB of DDR4 RAM by G.Skill with an impressive 2666MHz of bandwidth speed. All three components listed above come with what EVGA dubs as “Superclock support” which will further enhance the performance of the laptop.
The EVGA SC17 has a 2TB storage capacity and is further complimented with an optional 256GB of M.2 SSD for fast performance. Aside from that, the gaming laptop comes with (but not limited to) a USB 3.1 Type-C port along with a full HD front-facing camera. Specifications aside, EVGA claims that the SC17 is a unibody constructed laptop, which has a thickness of under 26mm.
It seems like EVGA is geared up for the gaming laptop market with the SC17. However, according to EVGA, the SC17 showcased at CES 2016 isn’t a finished product yet. EVGA plans to add finishing touches to the gaming laptop before it launches sometime this year.
