Intel has finally getting around to releasing the developer kit for a RealSense equipped smartphone. The kit is an Intel powered smartphone design that incorporates the Intel RealSense Camera ZR300 and is also fully compatible with Google’s Project Tango.
The device itself is powered by an Intel Atom x7-Z8700 processor and is fitted with 2GB RAM. Intel has also fitted the smartphone with 64GB of storage with no microSD expansion slot. The screen dominating the front of the developer kit is a 6-inch QHD display powered by Intel Gen 8 graphics.
It supports both Intel’s RealSense SDK, as well as the Google Project Tango SDK. Essentially, this kit attempts to cater to developers who are interested in building apps for either of those platforms. Although, to be fair, both Intel and Google are trying to achieve the same goal with their respective projects.
The RealSense camera allows the smartphone to sense its surrounds, providing a 3D image of what it sees. Project Tango attempts to use this capability to build devices that provide a more immersive augmented reality experience, while Intel has been focusing on the using the 3D image capture to allow devices to take 3D pictures.
At the moment, the Intel RealSense Smartphone Developer Kit is only available for registration; and there is no shipping date as of yet. It should also be noted that Intel is saying that the device will only be shipped to users in the United States of America.
