Lenovo has always been quick off the mark at CES, and this year it is no different. The company has announced a slew of new ThinkPad models, the highlights of which are the 2016 refresh of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and a new model in the form of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.
As the highest-end ThinkPad model, the 2016 edition of the X1 Carbon isn’t merely a simple refresh. On top of the expected update to Intel’s latest 6th Gen Core i7 vPro processors, Lenovo has actually made the ThinkPad X1 Carbon lighter than thinner – but with higher performance. At just 16.45mm thin and weighing just 1.18kg, the X1 Carbon is one of the few Ultrabooks that are tested to US Mil-Spec standards for durability – after all, this beast is made from a reinforced carbon fibre chassis.
The X1 Carbon sports either a WQHD (2,560 x 1,440) or a Full HD IPS display, and configurable hardware options include up to 16GB of RAM, and 1TB PCIe NVMe SSDs. Running on Windows 10 Pro, the X1 Carbon handles basic graphics via the integrated Intel HD Graphics HD520. There’s also an optional LTE-A modem for the road warriors, and an optional X1 WiGig dock that retails for $250 (about RM1,080).

For a slim Ultrabook, Lenovo sure packs a lot of I/O ports. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, miniDisplayPort, and a OneLink+ dock port that holds even more ports. The lightest 14-inch business Ultrabook also has longer battery life, rated for up to 11 hours.
Lenovo has, however, removed the touchscreen panel on the X1 Carbon. Instead, the company released another model for that: the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.
A brand new entry in the ThinkPad series, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga marries the sleek slim looks of the X1 Carbon with the 360-degree hinge of the ThinkPad Yoga to create a stylish versatile Ultrabook. The highlight of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga is a new 14-inch WQHD (2,560 x 1,440) OLED touch display, with IPS WQHD and Full HD touch panels offered as options for the lower-end configurations. Specs wise, the X1 Yoga is similar to the X1 Carbon, with Intel Skylake vPro Core i7 processors, up to 16GB of RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, optional LTE-A modem and WiGig dock, a similar I/O array, and an integrated Stylus Pen.
Naturally, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga is slightly larger than the X1 Carbon, measuring 16.76mm thin and weighing 1.27kg – still exceptionally light and passes US Mil-Spec standards. The Lift N’ Lock keyboard from the older ThinkPad Yoga makes an appearance here too, making it more comfortable to use in Tablet mode.
The ThinkPad X1 Carbon will be released in the US from February 2016 at a retail price starting from $1,299 (about RM5,620) while the ThinkPad X1 Yoga will be available starting this month from $1,449 (about RM6,270). Both will be released in other markets gradually.
