VoLTE is still a rather new technology in Malaysia, and not many devices support the feature yet. Well, if you happen to be a Huawei Mate 9 user on Digi, good news: Huawei is pushing out an update to Digi customers to enable VoLTE on the device.
We received this bit of news from Digi’s Principal of Communications, Ravind Valiapan. According to his Facebook post, Mate 9 users just need to ensure that their devices are running on EMUI 5.0 with build number “MHA-L29C636B136.” Once this is done, VoLTE should work on Digi’s network.
Also, we were told beforehand by Huawei engineers that the first batch of Mate 9 units in Malaysia do not support VoLTE out of the box: this seems to be the case with our unit, which is running on an older firmware. The same Huawei engineers elaborated that the second batch of the device will support VoLTE without the need of any firmware update. These units of the Mate 9 should be able to make VoLTE calls on any Malaysian telcos that offer the feature, which include Celcom, Yes 4G, as well as webe, which has not officially announced its rollout of the feature yet.
Nonetheless, it’s great to see that more devices now support VoLTE on Malaysia’s telco networks. Based on Digi’s website, other devices that support the feature include the iPhone 6/6 Plus or later.
