Diablo, the game that practically introduced an entire genre of games, is celebrating its 20th anniversary on 31 December 2016. Blizzard is preparing to commemorate the event by spreading the cheer across all of its games on Battle.net; including bringing the original title back for nostalgia.
Starcraft, Hearthstone, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Heroes of the Storm will all see additional Diablo themed cosmetic items appearing in the games. Most of these are player icons and don’t exactly affect gameplay in any way. That being said, it would seem that there are some surprises in store for players.
Heroes of the Storm will receive a new Diablo themed map for its Brawl mode, although there is no indication what this map will be like. Similarly, Hearthstone will apparently see a mysterious stranger appear with an unknown deck. It sounds suspiciously like a new weekly Tavern Brawl mode.
World of Warcraft will apparently see characters from the Diablo world of Sanctuary invade Azeroth. What is actually going to happen is unknown, but it should be a reasonably interesting event for those still playing the game.
Finally, Diablo III will be seeing the most exciting limited-time adventure yet. Blizzard announced that it would be bringing the original Diablo back at Blizzcon 2016. This involves rebuilding the entire game inside Diablo III – including grainy and pixelated graphics – and releasing it to the public for free. The only catch is that it requires the Reaper of Souls expansion to play.
