Sony recently has announced yet another addition to its PlayStation-branded audio peripherals line-up in the form of Platinum Wireless Headset. In addition to its wireless nature, the new headset also features a pair of 50mm drivers, and built-in dual noise-cancelling microphones.
Compatible with the existing PlayStation Headset Companion app, it also comes with 7.1 virtual surround sound capability. However, what made it stand out from previous PlayStation headsets is that it also capable of delivering 3D audio to PS4 games – a tech that is previously only within the realms of PlayStation VR.
Since the 3D audio capability is using proprietary tech, it appears that the support for the function need to be added by the game developers themselves. Naughty Dog is apparently the first major game developers that will add support to their games starting with a patch for Uncharted 4 very soon.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Days Gone, MLB The Show 17, and many other upcoming titles will also support 3D audio. Aside from PS4 and PS VR, the headset can generally be used with pretty much any PC or mobile device that has 3.5mm audio jack (sorry iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users, you need at least this RM 49 adapter to use it).
While it is not known at this moment whether Sony has planned to release this headset in Malaysia, it will be launched in United States in January 2017 for USD 159.99 (about RM 717).
