The Mechwarrior series is set to make a return to its single-player roots with Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries. The franchise has been relatively dormant for a very long time, but older gamers will fondly remember one of the best games from the western mecha genre.
Seven minutes of footage from the pre-alpha build was shown at MechCon 2016, where players were treated to seeing what appears to be an intro to the campaign. Built on the Unreal Engine, Mechwarrior 5 stars a rookie pilot who is part of a group of mercenaries selling their services to the highest bidder.
Nothing else is known about the game at the moment, although the footage showed gameplay similar to Mechwarrior Online. Piranha Games, the company responsible for both games, has said that MWO will continue as normal; and that a different team is working on the new title.
Mechwarrior 5 is set for a 2018 release; which means that a lot of things could change in between.
