It might have taken the company a while to finally deliver this particular feature to users but here it is: Netflix users can now download shows and movies from the service for offline viewing. Available through its Android and iOS apps from today onwards, the download feature can be utilized by users regardless of their Netflix subscription tiers.
On each downloadable show or movie, there is an icon that can be used to activate the download feature. They would then able to check the download status and access or delete the contents that they downloaded through the “My Downloads” section of the app.
The current list of downloadable contents seems to be quite substantial although it is mostly contained Netflix original productions such as Narcos, Stranger Things, Shooter, House of Cards, and others. Somehow, Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life (aha!) is not part of the list despite being Netflix’s own production.
To help users find these downloadable contents, Netflix has added a new category called “Available For Download” in both apps. However, the service didn’t mention the duration that users are able to keep the downloaded contents inside their device although one can choose to allow download to take place only through Wi-Fi connection.
All in all, the offline viewing function for Netflix should be useful for users that want to be entertained by the service while being on the go without taking the hit on their mobile data quota or during long travels where Internet connection might be scarce.
