When the OnePlus 3T was announced, many were wondering what would happen to the OnePlus 3. Well, it appears OnePlus will be discontinuing the latter in favour of the new OnePlus 3T, which isn’t all that surprising.
This information came from the folks over at Android Authority. When it contacted OnePlus regarding the status of the OnePlus 3, the Chinese company confirmed that its five-month-old device will indeed be discontinued. At the time of this writing, the OnePlus 3 is no longer sold in the US and Europe. Chances are, the device would also be discontinued in other regions in the coming weeks.
Although the OnePlus 3T isn’t as affordable as the OnePlus 3, it does boast better hardware. In comparison to its predecessor, the 3T has a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, a better 16MP front-facing camera, as well as a bigger 3,400mAh battery. Other than that, the OnePlus 3T also comes in a new Gunmetal colour and a 128GB variant; the OnePlus 3 only has 64GB of native storage.
Rounding out the specifications of the OnePlus 3T are a 5.5-inch 1080p Optic AMOLED display, 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilisation, as well as the same design and dimensions as the OnePlus 3.
Even though the OnePlus 3 has been discontinued, the company assured existing owners of the device that the device will receive Android updates at the same time as the OnePlus 3T. According to OnePlus, both the OnePlus 3T and 3 will be updated to Android 7.0 Nougat before the end of the year.
