Gartner has just released its Q3 2016 report for worldwide smartphone shipment, and for those of you who are eager to see how Samsung’s whole Galaxy Note 7 disaster affected the market, here it is. According to Gartner’s report, Samsung suffered its worst decline in smartphone sales, and who gained from it? Nope, it’s not Apple, instead, it’s Chinese smartphone vendors who benefitted the most.
According to the report, the overall smartphone sales grew by 5.4% year-on-year, and Chinese smartphone vendors were the only vendors in the global top five to increase sales in the third quarter of 2016. The vendors that grew the most were Oppo and BBK Communications, growing 3.3% and 2.4% respectively; Huawei also grew by 1%.
However, despite this, Samsung and Apple are still the top two smartphone vendors in the quarter. Samsung captures 19.2% of market share, dropping by 4.4%, while Apple has 11.5% market share, dropping by 1.5%. Samsung isn’t the only smartphone manufacturer to suffer this quarter, Gartner says that this is Apple’s lowest share since the first quarter of 2009, and that sales fell by 8.5% in the U.S. and by 31% in China, the two biggest markets for the Cupertino company.
As for operating systems, “Google’s Android continued to capture market share from Apple’s iOS”. Android now has 87.8% market share, increasing by 3.1%, while iOS market share dropped by 1.5% to 11.5% now. Gartner says that the withdrawal of Galaxy Note 7 may have benefited sales of iPhone 7 Plus only slightly as most Note 7 users are likely to say with Samsung or opt for other Android smartphones.
