The 2016 edition of Singles Day sales, likely to be the largest e-commerce event globally, is now in full swing in Malaysia. For those who have been waiting for a great deal for electronic goods, this will arguably be the best time of the year (unless you’re visiting the US during the Black Friday sales).
We’ve been searching through the popular e-commerce sites, and compiled a list of the best tech gadgets to get. Some of these deals are genuinely great, while others will prompt you to an impulse purchase (sorry).
But first, some pointers for those who are new to online shopping. Shopping online is safe, but do keep in mind who the seller is when you’re shopping in marketplaces like Lazada, Gemfive, and 11street. These sites also offer attractive discount codes to further reduce the already low prices – you’ll rarely see prices in physical retail stores to be cheaper.
Oh, and with cashback sites like Shopback around, you can save even more from your purchases.
With those out of the way, here’s what we’ve seen so far:
Microsoft Surface Pro 4: from RM2,999 in Lazada
One of 2016’s best Windows hybrids, the Surface Pro 4 is thin, light, and has good battery life for those who work on the go. The 4GB RAM/128GB SSD option now goes for only RM2,999 (with coupon code LUVPC300), but a better investment would be on the 8GB RAM/256GB model (RM4,369 with LUVPC500).
Of course, the price slash is a strong indication that the SP4 will reach the end of its shelf life soon – a successor is rumoured to come in early 2017 – but for those who cannot wait and need a solid Windows productivity machine, you can’t really go wrong here.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 2GB: RM499 in Lazada
Xiaomi has been one of the earliest adopters of the Singles Day sales in Malaysia, and this year it’s offering three deals: RM499 for the 2GB/16GB Redmi Note 3, a Mi Max bundle, and a new product: the Mi Power Bank Pro with USB Type C.
Of the three, the RM499 Redmi Note 3 is the best deal. RM200 shaved off makes this the best budget option you can find – you won’t find a Snapdragon 650 device with a Full HD display at this price range.
Xiaomi Mi Band 2: RM99 in Lazada
It’s not yet officially here – though there is a strong indication that it will given that it’s recently been registered in SIRIM – but RM99 is the lowest price for Xiaomi’s new fitness tracker we’ve ever seen.
If you’re looking for something even cheaper, the original Mi Band is going for RM39, while the Mi Band Pulse is retailing at RM53.
Sony PlayStation 4 Slim: RM1,199 in Lazada
There had been a special, limited deal for the PlayStation 4 Slim for just RM999 in Shoppu, but that’s now expired. The next best deal is on Lazada, which is selling the PS4 Slim for RM1,199 – slightly less than the RM1,349 retail price.
BlackBerry Priv: RM1,499 in 11street
A far, far cry from its original RM3,559 retail price when it was launched in Malaysia in December 2015, the Priv can be considered a steal at RM1,499. It runs on Android with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, but it is the last BlackBerry device with a physical keyboard – which will be appealing to some.
Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Blue Coral: RM2,659 in Lazada
One of the year’s best smartphones now comes in a new colourway. The Blue Coral hue was introduced in the now-discontinued Galaxy Note 7, but Samsung is offering its Galaxy S7 edge with this colour option.
If you aren’t into the fancy colour, the older colour options for the S7 edge go for as low as RM2,499 – a huge discount from the RM3,099 price tag.
Huawei Mate 8: Buy 1 Free 1 in Harvey Norman
One of the best smartphone deals so far. Even with the Mate 9 coming soon, the Mate 8 is still a solid phone – at half price, it’s just as attractive as the Priv above.
Check out our review of the Mate 8 while you’re checking out that order.
Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Type Cover: Buy 1 Free 1 in Harvey Norman
If you own (or recently bought) a Surface Pro 4 (or Surface 3 for that matter), this deal is an interesting one. At effectively RM264.50 each, this is a steep discount from the RM529 retail price (or the RM400 it usually goes for in Lazada).
Of course, two Type Covers may be one too many, so it might be smart to share this with another SP4 owner you know.
Logitech G403 Prodigy: RM228 in Lazada
One of the newer gaming mice released from Logitech, the G403 Prodigy is a great option for FPS gamers. It’s light at just 90g, but it also comes with a 10g weight. Unlike the G502 Proteus Spectrum (which is also a steal today at RM196.20), the G403 has less buttons and a more streamlined design.
The wired version retails for RM329, but you could cop it for less than RM200 today with Lazada’s coupon codes.
Avexir Core Series DDR4 2400MHz 8GB RAM: RM189 in Lazada
High performance RAM for your high performance PC build. RM189 is the cheapest price we’ve seen for this model, so it’s well worth a look if you’re looking to upgrade.
HP Spectre (Core i7): RM5,916 in Lazada
One of the thinnest laptops in the world is now more affordable than ever. From its RM6,900 retail price for the Core i7 model when it launched in the middle of this year, you can now grab it for about RM1,000 less than RRP. Even the Core i5 model is roughly RM1,000 off too.
We must say, this Microsoft/Intel promotion is offering some fantastic deals on Lazada for those looking for a laptop.
Samsung 43″ 4K HDR Smart TV: RM1,898.10 in Gemfive
Who knew there’d be a time when 4K TVs would hit the realm of genuine affordability so soon? While there are plenty of 4K TVs below RM3,000 thanks to Gemfive’s generous coupon codes (SINGLES10 or NOV10 are applicable for this), this is one of few that dip below the RM2,000 mark.
WD My Passport Ultra 2TB External Hard Disk: RM310.41 in Lazada
We love Western Digital hard drives for their long term reliability, and the My Passport external hard drives offer better performance over the entry-level My Essentials series. At just over RM300 (after the 10% discount for paying with HSBC cards), this is quite a good deal for 2TB; the 1TB model is going for RM253.90 before discount, if you prefer a smaller capacity.
Dell U2515H 25″ QHD Monitor: RM1,199 in Lazada
Dell’s Ultra Sharp range of monitors are excellent workhorses in any office environment. They offer super thin bezels (the newer models even feature InfinityEdge screens like those on the XPS laptops), are very versatile with adjustments, and most importantly, almost perfect colour reproduction.
The U2515H is the most affordable Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) monitor from Dell’s lineup, and today you can get it for a little lower than the already outstanding RM1,199 price tag – this monitor usually retails at RM1,599.
BenQ GL2460 24″ FHD Flicker Free Monitor: RM391.50 in Lazada
If you’re looking for a monitor on a tight budget, BenQ’s range of VA panel monitors may be worth taking a look. A 24-inch full HD monitor for less than RM400? That’s a sweet deal – though the DVI-D and VGA-out ports may be limiting.
