In general, indoor coverage is a tricky issue for any telcos as radio signals are susceptible to blocking and absorption which could lead to lost signals and patchy coverage. Maxis apparently has found a way to overcome this issue though through the implementation of Huawei’s LampSite solution.
To test the solution’s capability, Maxis and Huawei has embarked in a pilot test at Suria KLCC shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur which apparently has the highest mobile data usage density in the country at more than 1,300 GB per square kilometers during peak hours. According to Maxis, the solutions works really well to the extent that the telco is able to deliver 4G LTE+ download speed of up to 225Mbps inside the shopping mall.
Maxis CTO, Morten Bangsgaard has stated that the pilot deployment of LampSite is a significant milestone for the telco in its effort to deliver excellent mobile Internet experience within a shopping mall. However, the telco didn’t reveal whether the company is going to deploy the solution solution in other malls anytime soon.
Given the success in Suria KLCC and the fact that 75% of Maxis data traffic comes from indoor usages, it is definitely something that the telco should consider implementing in more malls and other buildings as soon as possible.
