At Apple’s MacBook event earlier this morning, the MacBook Air didn’t get much attention; the Cupertino company only mentioned that the 13-inch model will be sold alongside the three new MacBook Pro laptops. Turns out, it’s very likely that the MacBook Air is slowly being phased out: the 11-inch model has already been discontinued.
We first noticed this when the 11-inch MacBook Air is not available on Apple’s Malaysian online store anymore. Instead, only the 13-inch model is still being sold, which starts from RM4,199. In comparison, the most affordable 11-inch MacBook Air used to go for RM3,799.
More likely than not, the 13-inch MacBook Air is retained to serve as a more affordable option to the new – and much more costly – MacBook Pro laptops, which retails from a whopping RM6,299. At the launch event earlier today, Apple explicitly mentioned that the base model of the MacBook Pro – without the new Touch Bar – serves as an “alternative” to the 13-inch MacBook Air. After all, the new Pro is lighter and slimmer than the Air.
Even though Apple remains silent on the future of the MacBook Air, it’s likely that the Cupertino company is preparing to phase out the whole lineup. With the discontinuation of the 11-inch MacBook Air, this might happen sooner than later.
