Samsung may be handling the Galaxy Note 7 recall in the most eloquent manner possible, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t feeling the heat from the PR disaster. This is particularly evident by the recent take down notice over Youtube video of the exploding Note 7 Grand Theft Auto V mod.
The video in question is only one of many showing a mod that reskins the sticky bomb texture into a Galaxy Note 7. Interestingly, there is also more than one mod that pokes fun at the Note 7’s design flaw and subsequent recall.
While the DMCA claim against a harmless video may have been a bad move on the part of Samsung Electronics America, it also serves to remind us of just how bad the reporting system on Youtube is. The reporting system was intended to be used to resolve cases of copyright infringement, and not to silence critique or parody.
The GTA V mod itself is still available for download, as it is much harder to get other hosting sites to take things down. Nobody knows if the uploader of the video has filed an appeal with Youtube; but we wouldn’t expect much to happen knowing the customer service there.
