Sharp has made some quirky smartphones now and then. There’s RoboHon, a smartphone in the shape of a cute little robot, and just recently, the Japanese company showcased the Sharp Corner R, a smartphone with a 5.2-inch 1080p display with virtually no bezels – except for the bottom portion, of course.
In order to make such a unique-looking display, Sharp took advantage of its Free-Form Display technology, which allows IGZO LCD displays to be cut into various shapes. Based on images of the Corner R, it looks a lot like Samsung’s curved displays, only this one extends to the top two corners of the device, giving it a very aesthetically-pleasing appearance.
Unfortunately, the Corner R is merely a concept phone at the moment, so we won’t be seeing this unique display on a consumer product any time soon. It’s worth noting that the Corner R isn’t exactly Sharp’s first “bezel-less” smartphone either: there were the Aquos Crystal X, Aquos Crystal 2, and more recently, the Aquos mini.
It’s interesting to see companies push the envelope of smartphone technology, especially from a company that isn’t renowned for its smartphones. Hopefully, we’ll see such a display on consumer products in the near future – I’d certainly want one.
