Apple’s self-driving car plans are apparently not going well, and the company appears to be rethinking its approach to the entire thing. Several sources have confirmed that the iPhone maker is currently in talks with luxury supercar maker McLaren about a possible investment.
Known internally as Project Titan, the secretive project is said to be Apple’s attempt to build a self-driving car. However, reports indicate that Apple has begun cutting jobs from the effort. One source who spoke to the New York Times described the effort as lacking vision and being in complete disarray.
McLaren is not exactly the name that comes to mind when talking about self-driving cars. It’s vehicles are not aimed at consumers, and it would be difficult to imagine a name like McLaren building a more mass market product.
However, Apple’s interest in the luxury car maker seems to be concerned with McLaren’s research and development facilities. McLaren has been investing heavily into R&D as of late, although the fruits of this research are yet to be seen.
For now, neither company is commenting on the matter. Despite this, a spokesman for McLaren did not deny that the company was contacted by Apple.
