Grab has announced a new method avenue of payment for its customers: credit card points. This is being rolled out in partnership with Citigroup, and applies to customers who have registered their Citibank credit cards as their preferred payment option.
The early stages of the partnership will see Citibank card users receive a discounted first ride, after which they will begin to see SMS prompts asking if they would like to use their credit card points to pay for the ride instead. Neither Grab nor Citi have revealed what the conversion rate is, but the idea appears to be to allow card holders to spend their earned points in smaller chunks over a long period of time.
In addition to this, any Grab user who signs up for a Citibank credit card under this partnership will also receive three rides worth up to $50 (about RM200) each.
The partnership will first be deployed in the Philippines and Singapore; with Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand following soon after. No mention of whether Vietnam (where Grab also operates) is included in the deal, but it doesn’t appear to be on the short term plans.
