Blizzard has released its latest Overwatch animated short, titled “The Last Bastion”. As the name implies, the story centres on Bastion – the mobile turret that brings death and destruction to all who cross its path. Of course, this short shows a different side to the harbinger of doom.
The Last Bastion showcases Bastion’s backstory as a combat drone lost in a forest. All Bastions were programmed to kill humans during the Omnic crisis; but it would appear that the programming of this particular model has taken a mind of its own.
Like almost all of Blizzard’s animations, Bastion’s story has a production quality that would rival that of large studios. This particular short also evokes the same imagery as the Iron Giant; which incidentally also involved a weapon of war finding a more peaceful path in life.
Blizzard has done an impressive job in giving Bastion plenty of personality, despite the character only communicating in beeps and chirps. It’s no wonder why fans of the series have been calling for the company to begin work on a feature length movie (the disappointing Warcraft movie doesn’t count).
