If you are looking forward to the next generation Apple Watch, you might be in for a disappointment. According to reports, the wearable will not be getting any cellular data connectivity, which means that it will still need to rely on your phone in order for it to be fully functional. Fortunately, it looks like you might be able to use GPS on the device itself.
Back in April, there were reports saying that the Apple Watch 2 will come with cellular support. The report came from The Wall Street Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter”. However, according to Bloomberg, that will not be happening, not so soon anyway. Bloomberg reports that cellular models of the Apple Watch “may not be ready for release this year and that the feature may be pushed back to a later generation”. Part of the reason for not putting cellular connectivity on the wearable is that current cellular chips consume too much battery.
But not all hopes is lost, the news portal also says that Apple will include GPS chip into the Apple Watch 2. This will allow the device to precisely determine the user’s location so they can track running and walking distances more precisely. On top of that, with GPS on board, it means that users can rely on the Watch for navigation.
Apple is expected to announce the next iPhone next month, so let’s hope that apart from its next flagship smartphone, the Cupertino company will unveil its next Apple Watch too.
