Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) chairman Abdul Wahid Omar has said that Uber and Grab should consider reducing their service charges to allow drivers to secure more income. The comments came during a luncheon talk; where the former ministry spoke about his experience driving for Uber.
Abdul Wahid has spent 11 hours driving for Uber as part of a charity event shortly after ending is tenure as a senator. During that time, he said that he managed 17 trips and received RM210 in payment. Of that, RM50 went to Uber as part of the 25-percent service charge on drivers.
It is because of this experience that he believes that the service charge is too high, and should be reduced for the benefit of drivers.
Ride-sharing, or e-hailing, services often offer additional benefits for drivers; although this may not always offset the rather substantial charges imposed on drivers. Despite this, ride-sharing drivers rarely complained about the amount that goes back to the company that provides the app.
For the most part Abdul Wahid admitted that he still earned RM150 after subtracting his other expenses. That comes up to about RM13.60 an hour; which is still a lot better than the minimum wage in this country.
