Overwatch is just about due for a new map, and Blizzard has delivered on cue. First revealed at Gamescom in Germany, Eichenwalde is a castle siege that includes a slightly darker atmosphere then other Overwatch maps.
According to Blizzard’s description, the castle is the site of one of the most famous battles of the Omnic crisis; where Balderich von Alder held out against a massive siege. While von Alder and his soldiers eventually fell in battle, they managed to delay the Omnics long enough for the German military to arrive and drive the machines back.
Every map in Overwatch tells a story, and the details of this one haven’t quite been revealed yet. Thus far, all we know is that the attackers are trying to retrieve the remains of von Alder from his throne room.
Speculation is already flying that this could be the first reverse hybrid map, where the attacking team has to escort a payload before switching to an assault map. The theory is currently backed up by the cinematic which shows the battering ram payload bringing down a door; which is followed by several panning shots of the castle interior.
Eichenwalde is set to debut next month, although no exact date has been provided. It is likely that it will appear shortly before the start of the next competitive season starts on 6 September.
