Nvidia’s upcoming mobile GPU, the GTX 1080, is said to be equipped with the same memory standard, GDDR5X, as its full-sized desktop counterpart. If this were the case, one should expect both the mobile and desktop variants of the GTX 1080 to perform almost similarly.
Interestingly, this recent leak once again proves that Nvidia will no longer be using the “M” suffix for its mobile GPUs in the future (may only apply for high-end mobile GPUs). That said, omitting the “M” suffix may not only represent a name change; sources are saying that the reason for the name change is simply because both the desktop and mobile GPUs are essentially the same – which could explain the niche performance gap between them.
The specifications of MSI’s upcoming VR Ready gaming laptop has been leaked and it shows that the gaming laptop is indeed fitted with two GTX 1080 GPUs (SLI) with GDDR5X memory. In addition, some folks over in China had managed to obtain an unreleased Clevo gaming laptop from Baidu. According to them, a single GTX 1080 mobile GPU was able churn out a GPU clock speed of 1559MHz. The peak temperature for the Pascal-based mobile GPU was recorded at 85°C.
Judging by the amount leaks being reported regarding Nvidia’s mobile Pascal GPUs, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Nvidia making an official announcement regarding them in the near future.
