Alongside the newly launched Galaxy Note 7, Samsung has also unveiled a brand new Gear VR headset at its on-going Unpacked event in New York. While the physical design looks rather identical to the previous Gear VR, the new headset is slightly larger than its predecessor.
Co-developed with Oculus just like the earlier edition, the new headset is still slightly lighter than the older version at 312 grams. Additionally, the field of view (FOV) on the new Gear VR has also been increased to 101 degrees as opposed to 98 degrees on the previous headset.
Despite being made for Galaxy Note 7 which explains why it is equipped with a USB Type-C port, the new Gear VR still able to support older micro USB-based Galaxy devices including S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 edge+, S6 edge, and S6. At the same time, its general functionalities also remains identical to the older Gear VR.
Meanwhile, Samsung has yet to reveal the pricing and release date for the new Gear VR in Malaysia. Based on previous experiences though, we do expect the headset to make an appearance alongside the equally new Galaxy Note 7 once the new smartphone arrive here in Malaysia on 19 August. So, stay tuned.
