In general, there are several organizations in Malaysia that offered scholarships but this one is slightly different in nature though. This is more about winning a tournament rather than academic qualification as Garena has include scholarship as part of the prize for the new season of Malaysia Campus League which involves League of Legends.
However, the amount is limited to RM 6,000 per person in the team which might be the reason why Garena dubbed it as “partial scholarship”. On top of that, the winning team will also receive RM 2,500 cash prize and represents Malaysia at the League of Legends International Collegiate Championship in the Philippines this November.
At the same time, Malaysia Campus League will also feature another separate division for secondary school students. Given the target participants, the prizes will not include scholarship although there are still cash prizes involved. According to Garena, the new season of Malaysia Campus League will take place from 13 August to 24 September 2016.
Meanwhile, it is interesting to see how Garena has taken the step further to align this particular tournament with college and school students. While the amount of the partial scholarship might not be much, it could be a good start in order to show that competitive gaming wouldn’t get in the way of one’s education.
