Solid-state drives are definitely favoured over traditional spinning drives for their superior performance, but when you need storage over performance, the latter is usually preferred. Enter Seagate’s brand new Barracuda Pro HDD, which comes with a whopping 10TB storage.
The Barracuda Pro is part of Seagate’s new trio of HDDs; the other two 10TB drives are the IronWolf – to be used for NAS appliances – and the SkyHawk, which is designed for around-the-clock surveillance systems. The Barracuda Pro, on the other hand, is targeted at those who need “high capacity storage at an affordable price point.”
Aside from its very generous 10TB storage, the Barracuda Pro is a run-of-the-mill hard disk drive. It is a 7,200rpm 3.5-inch drive with a SATA 6Gbps interface, 128MB of cache, and a claimed sustained transfer speed of up to 220MB/s. Interestingly, the Barracuda Pro also comes in 8TB and 6TB variants; all three capacities are covered by a five-year warranty.
While the Seagate 10TB Barracuda Pro doesn’t exactly offer the best storage-to-price ratio, it will certainly be useful to consumers who need a lot of storage on a single drive. The Barracuda Pro is now on sale in the US for $535, which comes up to about RM2,165.
