Pokemon Go appeared to be working once more in Malaysia; at least for a very short period of time. The highly anticipated game – which officially launched in the US, Australia, and New Zealand last week – was said to have put its global rollout on hold to resolve server issues.
Now, to be fair, the app is not yet officially in Malaysia yet; which is why the temporary function was surprising. Rumours of those sideloading the app being banned remain unconfirmed, but there are some who would rather not take the risk. Despite this, the app is still region locked and will not load any Pokemon or locations for those connecting from outside the launch regions.
It should be noted security companies have already reported seeing Pokemon Go apk files with backdoors installed. This represents a severe security risk, and those looking to download the game from outside Google Play should take extra care to ensure that they do not fall victim to cybercriminals.
