The fasting month is upon us again, and Google Malaysia has shared a collection of search trends from Malaysia in recent times. The data shows the expected spikes in searches for doa, Raya music, and zakat; but also displayed some rather interesting trends surrounding Malaysian practices during this time.
Raya music searches unsurprisingly surge during this time period. Hitting the peak just after the fasting month ends. Searches for food or recipes do not follow this trend, as the number of searches marginally increases. All this shows is that Malaysians are constantly looking for food; we don’t need celebrations as an excuse.
Searches for muslim prayers and practices also begin to spike at the second week of Ramadan. Google has compiled a list of the top 10 doa, showing that a large number of people are concerned with repentance.
Doa tidur
Doa taubat
Doa selepas solat
Doa qunut rumi
Doa qunut
Doa iftitah
Doa dhuha
Doa buka puasa
Doa selamat
Doa makan
Aside from these expected searches, Malaysians also consistently search for “almonds” during this time. Google’s analytics show a massive spike in searches for the nuts around Ramadan for the last three years. In fact, the surge in searches for almonds only comes second to people trying to find out how to pay zakat online.
Youtube use also increases during Ramadan. Google Malaysia says that this is largely due to people looking of recipes; although it also claims that Youtube becomes the primary source of entertainment for many Malaysians.
