Not content with the GT83 Titan SLI with dual desktop Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 GPUs, MSI’s two other new gaming laptops, the GT73 Titan SLI and the slim GS73 Stealth, are the first laptops in the world with 120Hz IPS displays.
For gaming enthusiasts, having monitors with high refresh rates mean a smoother gaming experience – most gamers will have GPUs that are capable of rendering games at more than 60fps, which is the current maximum refresh rate of most monitors. The more frames the monitor displays in a second, the smoother animations will look, and for those who have played on 120Hz or even 144Hz monitors, the difference with a 60Hz panel is very noticeable.
With that in mind, MSI’s two new 17.3-inch laptops offer IPS displays that feature 120Hz refresh rates with a response time of 5ms. It’s the first time on a laptop, and might mean gamers may not need to invest in an external monitor.
The slightly lower-end model in the GT series, the GT73 comes with either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M SLI or a desktop GTX 980 GPU. It sports a few similar technologies with the top-tier GT83 Titan SLI, including MSI’s Super RAID 4, ESS Sabre Hi-Fi DAC, and the Cooler Boost Titan thermal management system.
The GT73 also offers four RAM slots for up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM, three storage bays (2x NVMe M.2 SSD up to 512GB and a 1TB hard disk), and of course, a 17.3-inch Full HD IPS display with the headlining 120Hz refresh rate.
On the other hand, the GS73 is a sleek and slim gaming laptop, weighing just 2.6kg – lighter than some 15.6-inch laptops. Packing an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M, the GS73 also features an Intel Core i7 processor, two RAM slots for up to 32GB of memory, and two storage bays (1x NVMe M.2 SSD up to 512GB and a 1TB hard disk).
It’s also got a Thunderbolt 3 port, dual 4K output, ESS Sabre Hi-Fi DAC, and a SteelSeries keyboard installed with the SteelSeries Engine 3 software. Just like the GT73, the GS73 sports a similar 17.3-inch 120Hz Full HD IPS display.
Both laptops will be available in different hardware variants and in selected global markets from August 2016. The GT73 starts at $2,500 (about RM10,350), while the GS73 will retail from $1,700 (about RM7,000).
