As usual, Asus unveiled a slew of new products at Computex 2016. Interestingly enough, however, there was one particular product the company did not announce at its press conference: its own VR headset. Dubbed simply as the Asus VR, this is one interesting – and familiarly designed – headset.
At first glance, the Asus VR looks a lot like Samsung’s Gear VR; it functions almost the same way as well, as it requires a compatible smartphone. Naturally, the Asus VR works only with the company’s recently unveiled devices; namely, the ZenFone 3 series. However, as common sense would dictate, the VR headset is only compatible with the ZenFone 3 and ZenFone 3 Deluxe. After all, the ZenFone 3 Ultra is more a tablet than it is a smartphone.
Design-wise, the Asus VR appears to have a leather strap that goes over the head of its user. In fact, it looks a lot like the leather strap of the Asus ZenWatch 2. The Asus VR was also available for testing at the experiential zone; based on what we were told, the test unit was merely a prototype, so it remains to be seen how similar it is to other manufacturers’ equivalents like Samsung’s Gear VR.
Not surprisingly, we do not have any information on the retail price of the Asus VR. That said, we were told that the VR headset will be released sometime in Q3 to Q4 2016.
