There are no electronics involved and accessories will still have to be connected via the Lightning port or Bluetooth. What the case does is instead plays host to two proprietary slots located on the back of the phone case: one at the bottom and another at the top.
Of course, accessories will have to be designed to fit Otterbox’s “Universe system” slot. However, OtterBox – being a big name itself – has managed to get a diverse group of accessory makers on board, with some of the notable ones like Square and SanDisk.
As with most accessory modules (think LG G5’s “Friends” ), the Universe’s accessories comes at a hefty price. There is the Square Chip Reader which retails for $49.99 (about RM 205), SanDisk’s flash drive modules that ranges from $59.99 to $119.99 (about RM 250 to RM 500) and a thermal imaging camera module that retails for $249 (about RM 1030). The case itself starts at $49.95 (about RM 205) and is now available at OtterBox’ site.
