Uber has expanded its services to Kota Kinabalu, and the ride-sharing service is celebrating the occasion. For the next two weeks, all referral codes are being doubled in value – which means they are now worth RM20.
This latest expansion from Uber is not entirely surprising, as the service has been aggressively expanding operations in Malaysia – and in the region. Kota Kinabalu is the fifth city in the country services by Uber, following operations in the Klang Valley, Penang, Ipoh, and Johor Bahru. That being said, the Ipoh operations are not run full time and were only available during the 2016 Chinese New Year period.
To make things more interesting, Uber is also running a sweepstakes that gives riders the chance to win a three day two night stay at Le Meridian in Kota Kinabalu. Entering the sweepstakes requires Uber users to share their referral code. Each use of the code is considered a single entry into the sweepstakes, and there is no limit to the number of entries. The contest runs from today until 19 May, and winners will be notified via email on 25 May.
Uber’s operations have received a boost in recent weeks with the Land Public Transport Commission preparing a proposal that would legalise its services by the end of the year. That being said, the company’s data driven approach to fares has also found it in trouble with driver-partners in Penang; who think that the newly reduced rates are hurting their income.
